mlive.comAttorney: Security guard didn’t try to stop Oxford school shooting, thought it was a drill
OXFORD, Mich. (AP) — An armed security officer told investigators she thought an active shooting at a Michigan high school was a drill and that one of the bleeding students simply was wearing “really good makeup,” an attorney suing the school district said Wednesday. Attorney Ven Johnson said he is asking a judge to add the security officer’s name to a lawsuit he filed in January against Oxford Community Schools. The suit also names Oxford High School’s dean of students, two counselors and three teachers as defendants. Johnson said in an amended complaint that school surveillance video he recently reviewed shows the security officer “casually walking around in the hallway” during the Nov. 30 shooting at the high school about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Detroit. “She apparently, according to what she told investigators, she was confused because she heard on the radio that there was an ALICE drill,” Johnson told reporters.

SAGINAW, MI -- Larry Rodarte is tired of the Latino community being silent on issues. Rodarte, director of Saginaw’s La Union Civica and publisher of Mi Gente Magazine, says that needs to change with a renewed focus on mental health and community awareness. “I haven’t seen this kind of local outcry since Oxford, and before that parkland and that was four years ago,” Rodarte said. Rodarte called it shame that more people aren’t involved to make a change after what happened in Oxford, six months ago. “The images we’ve seen in a Tex-Mex community, with relations not unsimilar to ours here in Saginaw, really hit home,” Rodarte said.

OXFORD, MI -- Several dozen students at Oxford High School walked out of class Thursday as part of a protest against ongoing gun violence in the U.S. and in support of the victims and families of the shooting in Texas earlier this week. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the students marched out of class around noon and walked to the nearby football field where they gathered and formed a “U” shape on the field. The shooting in Texas took place less than six months after a deadly shooting at Oxford High School. On Nov. 30, four students were killed at the high school by a classmate who brought a gun to school with him that day.
