Red Wings allow too much easy offense in frustrating performace
Poor execution led to too much easy offense for the Columbus Blue Jackets, more than the Red Wings could overcome with a big third-period rally in a 4-3 loss at Little Caesars Arena. “It’s frustrating when you give up way too much easy offense to their skill,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. Olli Maatta (5:50), Jake Walman (7:08) and Lucas Raymond (15:56) scored in the third period but the Red Wings’ comeback fell just short. The Red Wings are 18-16-7 at the midway mark of the season, with only one more point (43) than they accumulated through 41 games in 2021-22. And the Red Wings looked nothing like the team that beat Toronto on Thursday.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings staged a furious third-period rally Saturday but could not overcome their many defensive mistakes earlier in the game. Patrik Laine scored three goals for his 10th career hat trick and the Columbus Jackets held on for a 4-3 victory at Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings (18-16-7) have 43 points after 41 games, the midway mark of the season, just one more than they accumulated at the same juncture last season (18-17-6). The Red Wings had numerous defensive breakdowns, leaving the Blue Jackets open for many backdoor plays, a couple they converted. Four Red Wings had drifted to Gaudreau’s side of the ice before Adam Erne left Laine open.

NHL training camps open with sense of urgency
It was the first day of training camp for Laviolette and the Washington Capitals and most of the NHL. Camps are now open for the league's 31 teams and they will last just 10 days. “You get a fresh start,” said Jeff Skinner of the Buffalo Sabres, who haven't played a game since March. “Most players would argue that camps are a little bit long anyway," Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler said. “I’ve been told from our team and from the league, when a player is not on the ice during training camp, we’re supposed to say he’s not available today,” Philadelphia coach Alain Vigneault said.
NHLPA approves going forward with 24-team playoff talks
In giving the format the green light, the NHLPA stressed several details still need to be negotiated before games can begin. The proposal will now go to the NHL board of governors, which is expected to approve the plan in the next few days. Though the approval is considered significant, the task of establishing a path to getting players back on the ice remains challenging. Its unclear how the league will address players concerns over spending potentially lengthy stretches of time in self-isolation away from their families. Overall, I think players will be fine during the summer months, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the return to play format has not been approved.
Zibanejad scores 5 goals to lead Rangers past Caps in OT
The Rangers defeated the Capitals 6-5 in overtime; Zibanejad scored five goals. And, the last put him in the New York Rangers' record books and delivered them a big-time victory. Zibanejad is the first Rangers center with at least 35 goals in a season since Hall of Famer Eric Lindros in 2001-02. Zibanejad joined Don Murdoch (Oct. 12, 1976) and Mark Pavelich (Feb. 23, 1983) as Rangers with five goals in a game. That came after Zibanejad scored on a rebound with 1:42 remaining to give New York a brief 5-4 lead.
