Alabama city throws 'Tardy Gras' parade as pandemic ebbs
With both COVID-19 hospitalizations and vaccinations ebbing, Alabama's port city is putting on a Mardi Gras-style parade that will feel at least a little like the Carnival celebrations that were canceled earlier this year because of the pandemic. Plastic beads and other trinkets will fly as nearly 30 floats from Mardi Gras groups snake through downtown Mobile on Friday night with high school marching bands, squeals and blaring speakers providing a soundtrack for the party, which coincides with a ship commissioning. “With so much interest we could have had more if space would allow, but parades can only be so long,” said Judi Gulledge, who is coordinating the event.news.yahoo.com

Chinese spacecraft enters Mars' orbit, joining Arab ship
China's space agency said the five-ton combination orbiter and rover fired its engine to reduce its speed, allowing it to be captured by Mars' gravity. “Entering orbit has been successful ... making it our country’s first artificial Mars satellite,” the agency announced. Tianwen, the title of an ancient poem, means “Quest for Heavenly Truth.”Landing a spacecraft on Mars is notoriously difficult. In 2011, a Mars-bound Chinese orbiter that was part of a Russian mission didn’t make it out of Earth orbit. AdBefore the arrival this week of the Chinese spacecraft and the UAE’s orbiter, six other spacecraft were already operating around Mars: three U.S., two European and one Indian.
Arecibo radio telescope, damaged beyond repair, seen from space
Satellites spotted gashes in the damaged Arecibo Observatory, which is set to be decommissioned by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The 57-year-old radio telescope has sustained two cable failures which has made its massive dish too unstable to safely repair, according to the NSF . (Image credit: Planet Labs Inc.) Rocket Lab launches 10 Earth-observation satellites into orbit
Nine of the 10 payloads are "SuperDoves," shoebox-sized cubesats built by San Francisco-based imaging company Planet , which operates the world's largest Earth-observation constellation. More than 350 Planet satellites have reached orbit to date, about 150 of which are currently operational. The payloads were deployed as scheduled about an hour after launch, Rocket Lab representatives said.
