DETROIT – The Detroit Rescue Mission’s Genesis House II is doing amazing things for women and children in Detroit without a place to call home. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the shelter could have easily closed, but instead they stayed open and found new ways to help by offering job training, virtual education for children and more. The computer lab upgrade is a part of a Comcast program called Lift Zones, which aims to help bridge the digital divide in Michigan. MUSKEGON, MI - With winter approaching, local food pantries and shelters are gearing up for a higher number of people seeking help. But Muskegon County community service organizations say the impact of COVID-19 will intensify this year’s need for assistance. Related: Michigan National Guard COVID-19 help extended through March 2021MAP, a healthy choice food pantry, is now preparing for another spike. The number of Muskegon County residents facing hunger has risen to 20.6% compared to 14.1% from before the pandemic, according to current projections from Feeding America. “That’s a big jump,” said Molly Kooi of Feeding America West Michigan, which operates mobile food pantries in Muskegon County.

US Coast Guard rescues 10 people from water in Grand Traverse Bay

GRAND TRAVERSE BAY, Mich. The US Coast Guard rescued 10 people from the water in Grand Traverse Bay on Friday. Officials say the people were rescued after their boat starting sinking into the water. At around 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sector Sault Sainte Marie Command Center received a distress radio call from a 30-foot vessel that was taking on water. The crew got on scene within 20 minutes and deployed their rescue swimmer to transfer everyone to a Good Samaritan vessel that had arrived to assist. In the video a a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer can be seen assisting 10 people from a sinking 30-foot vessel to a Good Samaritans vessel in Grand Traverse Bay on Friday.
