mlive.comLions pushed for assistant Shaun Dion Hamilton to get Senior Bowl opportunity
MOBILE, Ala. -- Detroit Lions defensive assistant coach Shaun Dion Hamilton was fighting for a linebacker spot in training camp less than one year ago. Now, Hamilton has one full season on an NFL staff under his belt, with the opportunity to coach the American team’s defensive backs at the 2023 Senior Bowl. I’m so grateful and thankful for the opportunity for them to even bring me on staff after I got done playing. He’s also a former Alabama standout and Montgomery native, so he’s more than familiar with the region and Senior Bowl event. The Detroit Lions have sent their staff for two of the last three Senior Bowls, with defensive assistant Shaun Dion Hamilton the lone coach in Mobile for the 2023 event. “Everyone at the Senior Bowl is excited about this new coaching format since it connects our players to half the league’s teams behind the scenes during the week,” Nagy said in a previous statement. mlive.comRecently-cut Lions linebacker reportedly joins staff as defensive assistant
ALLEN PARK -- Shaun Dion Hamilton is back with the Detroit Lions, this time as a new defensive assistant coach, according to the Detroit News. The 26-year-old linebacker first joined the Lions after getting claimed via Washington following the 2020 season. Hamilton didn’t make it through training camp last year, landing on injured reserve before the season. It’s worth noting that Hamilton called the defensive plays in the team’s player-led practice near the end of training camp. He handled outside linebackers in his first season on the staff, switching to the far-reaching role after the team cut ties with inside linebackers coach Mark DeLeone in February.
mlive.comRookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez’s stock is soaring in Lions training camp
ALLEN PARK -- Aidan Hutchinson has been impressive in Detroit Lions training camp. Guys like him don’t even make it out of training camp all the time. Now Campbell is already having conversations with position coach Kelvin Sheppard about promoting Rodriguez up the depth chart. The former Oklahoma State standout has played mostly the WILL in camp, while adding some work at the MIKE in sub-packages. “I’ll tell you what, his key and diagnose for a young guy right now is pretty good, pretty good,” Campbell said.
mlive.comReturner Corey Ballentine becomes Lions’ 14th player on injured reserve; roster spot open
The Lions announced on Thursday morning they are moving Corey Ballentine to injured reserve. Ballentine is the 14th player to land on IR already, by far a high in the NFC North. Detroit did not announce a corresponding roster move heading into the final day of practice for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Both Decker and Strong returned to practice this week and are eligible to return to the 53-man roster at any time. He is expected to play left tackle when he returns to the field, bumping rookie Penei Sewell back to right tackle.
mlive.comKevin Strong becomes 10th Lions player to land on injured reserve; K Ryan Santoso elevated against Ravens
ALLEN PARK -- Three weeks into the regular season, and the body count on injured reserve has already hit double digits. The Detroit Lions announced a flurry of roster moves on Saturday afternoon, including moving defensive tackle Kevin Strong to injured reserve. The Lions have accounted for that by signing kicker Ryan Santoso to the practice squad this week, then elevating him to the game-day roster for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Lions also signed long snapper Beau Brinkley and punter Lachlan Edwards to the practice squad, perhaps realizing the value of having some depth at the specialist positions with COVID going around in that room. Detroit released receiver Javon McKinley and tight end Jared Pinkney from the practice squad.
mlive.comLions clear 3 roster spots to meet NFL deadline; place LB Shaun Dion Hamilton on injured reserve
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions got their roster under the 85-player limit by waiving defensive tackle Michael Barnett and injured receiver Chad Hansen, placing linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton on injured reserve. Dion Hamilton is the most notable of these three names, drawing his fair share of praise from the coaching staff since camp opened. He was in the mix for the depth linebacker spots, primarily battling Jahlani Tavai, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Anthony Pittman. Hamilton played 20 defensive snaps in Detroit’s preseason opener. Despite his continued struggles, inside linebackers coach Mark DeLeone said Tavai is in a good spot to make the roster.
mlive.comDay 4 notes and observations: T.J. Hockenson shining bright for Detroit Lions offense
Hockenson is a Pro Bowl tight end. “That’s fun in training camp,” Hockenson said after practice. The former top-10 pick is coming off a fabulous sophomore season where he racked up 67 catches for 723 yards, more than any other tight end in the NFC, and made his first Pro Bowl. He also attended “Tight End University,” a gathering of some of the best players in the league at that position. So new quarterback Jared Goff has turned frequently to Hockenson, and the big tight end continues to produce.
