Derek Lalonde on underachieving Red Wings: We’re better than that
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings were looking good after winning at Tampa Bay on Dec. 8, extending a promising start to the season. It’s not complete,” coach Derek Lalonde said. We’re better than that and can be better than that.”Lalonde said it’s important they judge themselves on performance, not results, and their play hasn’t been all bad. We were on our heels for the last two periods.”The Red Wings haven’t played a complete game in more than two weeks. More: Red Wings seek ways to get back ‘that good feeling’
mlive.comTampa Bay prepared Red Wings’ Derek Lalonde to become NHL head coach
DETROIT – Derek Lalonde gained a wealth of knowledge and experience during his four-year apprenticeship as an assistant coach in Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay was the proving ground that prepared Lalonde for his first NHL head coaching job with the Detroit Red Wings. It’s also the Red Wings’ first game with former head coach Jeff Blashill behind the Lightning bench as an assistant. Assistant coaches don’t have much interaction with the GM, but as head coach, Lalonde now deals regularly with Yzerman. It’s been great so far.”Among many challenges Lalonde and every head coach faces is making sure his message to players doesn’t get stale over time.
mlive.comAP Source: Brady could be fined for apparent kick of Jarrett
The NFL has looked at Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett’s disputed roughing-the-passer penalty on Tampa Bay's Tom Brady to determine whether Brady attempted to kick Jarrett and if that warrants a fine, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. Jarrett was flagged for slinging Brady to the ground during Tampa Bay’s 21-15 win over Atlanta on Sunday.
news.yahoo.comHurricane Ian path nears Florida as it powers up to Category 4 storm
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Forecasters say Hurricane Ian has become an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm as it approaches Florida’s west coast. The hurricane center predicted Ian would roar ashore on Florida’s southwest coast on Wednesday afternoon. Forecasters said the storm surge could reach 12 feet (3.6 meters) if it peaks at high tide. Flash floods were possible across the whole state, and portions of its east coast faced a potential storm surge threat as Ian’s bands approach the Atlantic Ocean. As a precaution, hundreds of residents were being evacuated from several nursing homes in the Tampa area, where hospitals also were moving some patients.

news.yahoo.comTampa's Phoenix simulation anticipated Category 5 hurricane
In ominous tones, a documentary narrator describes the devastation wrought on the Tampa Bay, Fla. area by “Phoenix,” a tropical storm that grew into a Category 5 hurricane. Phoenix was imaginary, part of a 2009 government preparation exercise for a killer hurricane dubbed Project Phoenix — an exercise updated in 2020 focusing on small business recovery. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Florida Department of Emergency Management sponsored the 2009 simulation to identify gaps in local emergency planning and figure out responses across jurisdictions, Randy Deshazo, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council chief of staff, said Tuesday in an email.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said “significant wind and storm surge impacts” were occurring Tuesday morning in western Cuba. Tropical storm-force winds were expected in Florida late Tuesday, reaching hurricane force Wednesday morning. “This is a really really big hurricane,” Florida Gov. mlive.comVulnerable Tampa Bay braces for storm not seen in a century
It’s been more than a century since a major storm like Hurricane Ian has struck the Tampa Bay area, which blossomed from a few hundred thousand people in 1921 to more than 3 million today. Many of these people live in low-lying neighborhoods that are highly susceptible to storm surge and flooding they have rarely before experienced, which some experts say could be worsened by the effects of climate change. The problem confronting the region is that storms approaching from the south, as Hurricane Ian is on track to do, bulldoze huge volumes of water up into shallow Tampa Bay and are likely to inundate homes and businesses.

mlive.comFive priorities for new Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde
He enters a much different situation as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, faced with the tough task of accelerating a rebuild that began more than five years ago and hit a rough patch the final two months of the 2021-22 season. The Red Wings have missed the playoffs six years in a row and have ranked at or near the bottom of the NHL in offense, defense and special teams in recent seasons. Lalonde must instill a defensive mindset and implement a system where the team doesn’t allow as many scoring chances. Make team harder to play againstFrom bad starts to late collapses, the Red Wings lacked fortitude and resilience during their season-ending 9-18-4 stretch that included losses by scores of 9-2, 11-2 and 7-2. It is not realistic to expect the Red Wings to reach the playoffs next season.

The defense stepped up as well, holding Tampa Bay to under 200 total yards, and forcing three turnovers.

The Panthers showed why again on Thursday with a 5-2 victory over the Red Wings at FLA Live Arena. The Panthers won their 12th in a row to equal a franchise record. Florida swept the four-game season series from Detroit and the past three games weren’t particularly close as the Panthers outscored the Red Wings 17-5. “I think games like tonight against a team that is going to be in the Stanley Cup conversation are good measuring sticks,” Red Wings forward Sam Gagner said. It shows the rebuilding Red Wings that fortunes can change quickly.
mlive.comNo moral victory for Red Wings: ‘We have to find a way to win these kind of games’
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings did some good things Saturday, playing well defensively to limit high-powered Tampa Bay’s scoring opportunities and getting strong goaltending from Alex Nedeljkovic when the Lightning did have chances. But as they have said several times this season, moral victories do them no good, even against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion.

Super Bowl ads went for light humor. Not all succeeded
This photo provided by Cadillac shows a scene from Cadillac's 2021 Super Bowl NFL football spot. They aimed to connect to the estimated 100 million viewers who tune in to the Super Bowl broadcast each year. Perhaps the most striking effect: Virtually none of the ads featured people in masks, a public-health priority but also a grim reminder of the ongoing pandemic. AIMING TO ENTERTAINIn an effort to be light, advertisers stuffed -- and sometimes overstuffed — their ads with celebrities. “I like Springsteen and heartwarming ads like this generally, but this one feels too forced given the current political climate,” he said.

Super Host: Bucs become 1st to play Super Bowl at home
The Buccaneers defeated the Packers 31-26 to advance to the Super Bowl. Tampa Bay (14-5) is the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium. The prize is much different this year, though, because the Super Bowl will be played in front of a far smaller crowd than usual. The first Super Bowl in 1967 was played in front of 61,946 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Eagles backup Nick Foles threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns, a sign of things to come in the Super Bowl against New England.

Smith’s Bears teams from the beginning of last decade are near the top of that list. Chicago lost five of six and missed the postseason as the seventh seed with an 8-8 mark. The tough-luck missing playoff team that season was the Giants, who missed out the year before Eli Manning and Co. won their second Super Bowl under coach Tom Coughlin.

Tropical Storm Eta races off Carolinas after soaking Florida
One death in Florida was linked to the storm, along with some scattered flooding and forecasters said the tropical storm was on a path offshore of South Carolina that would eventually take it further out to sea. That came amid a combination of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico being carried up by a cold front that had pushed Eta across Florida earlier. Earlier Thursday, Eta was in the Gulf of Mexico when it slogged ashore near Cedar Key, Florida. Before that first brush with Florida, Eta first hit Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane and killed at least 120 people in Central America and Mexico, with scores more missing. A 29th named system, Tropical Storm Theta, was centered late Thursday about 440 miles (705 kilometers) south of the Azores and moving east.

Still, Fox won the prime-time evening with its best performance on a Wednesday night since May. The start was delayed by rain for 91 minutes to 10:06 p.m. and the final out was at 1:47 a.m. The Dodgers' seven-game NL Championship Series win over the Atlanta Braves averaged 4,410,000 viewers on Fox and FS1. Bucs-Raiders game moved from prime time after COVID-19 test
The NFL has shifted the Las Vegas game against Tampa Bay out of prime time after several Raiders players have been unable to practice this week because of contact tracing from the coronavirus. The game between the Seahawks and Cardinals in Arizona has been moved into the prime-time window. The league says the changes were made out of an “abundance of caution” to make sure a game would be available for Sunday night. The Raiders placed starting right tackle Trent Brown on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday after he tested positive for the coronavirus. Safety Johnathan Abram also has been unable to practice because of contact tracing.

Top relievers Kenley Jansen, Blake Treinen and Brusdar Graterol should all be fresh for a bullpen game against Tampa Bay after they weren't needed in an 8-3 win Tuesday. Jansen has more blown saves (three) than conversions (two) in two previous World Series and also struggled this fall, but he seemed to have himself righted by the end of the NLCS. Manager Kevin Cash — uncharacteristically slow to pull starter Tyler Glasnow in Game 1 — also has fresh arms in the bullpen. After separating his troubled right shoulder while bumping forearms celebrating his go-ahead homer in NLCS Game 7, the Dodgers slugger touched feet with teammates after going deep in the World Series opener Tuesday.
