Achy backs. Sore necks. Working from home has created new demand for physical therapy. ‘Your body just can’t handle it.’
Like many medical providers, physical therapists saw patient visits drop dramatically in early 2020, when the pandemic started. During those early months, 54% of physical therapists said they were working fewer hours, according to an American Physical Therapy Association survey. In recent months, however, some local physical therapists say they’re seeing nearly as many patients as they did before COVID-19, with many people visiting for pandemic-related problems.

DETROIT As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit in March, clinicians had to find ways to continue working with their patients while preventing the spread of the virus. A number of clinicians now hold teletherapy sessions, meeting with their patients online from the comfort of their homes. Therapists like Dr. Reg Williams of the University of Michigan say the virtual alternative has been a useful resource amid the pandemic, and may even remain a popular choice once the threat of the virus is gone.
