Apple considering monthly subscription plan for iPhones and iPads

Apple is planning a subscription service for its hardware devices such as the iPhone and iPad, according to a report from Bloomberg News. Under the proposed plan, the company wants to make owning an iPhone or iPad like subscribing to apps or the iCloud for a monthly fee. The subscription service would represent the culmination of one Apple investor’s desire to sell its gadgets as a subscription, which could lead to increased revenue and a boost in stock price. Apple currently offers monthly plans, but according to the report, this would be different. Instead of paying in monthly installments spread across one or two years, subscribers would pay a “yet-to-be-determined monthly fee that depends on which device the user chooses,” the Bloomberg News report said.

Op-ed: Big tech stumbled into 2021. Don’t let that distract you from their long-term growth prospects

On the winning side, since last September, are adherents of value, cyclical, and reopening stocks that have been rallying hard. On the losing side are investors who have owned the large cap growth stocks, such as Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Netflix, that carried the market through most of 2020. Both sides agree on one thing: Gross domestic product growth will be combustible in 2021, thanks to two critical factors. As the table below illustrates, Tech and Communications Services have lagged Energy, Financials and Industrials, the three major "value" groups. The table below highlights the performance of the S&P and the tech-heavy Nasdaq during years of strongest GDP growth and those following a recession since 1975.

Chinese exports surge as global demand recovers from virus

(AP Photo/Andy Wong)BEIJING – China’s exports surged 60.6% over a year earlier in the first two months of 2021, after factories reopened and global demand started to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. AdForecasters say the Chinese export surge should decelerate as demand for masks and other medical supplies eases and overseas competitors return to global markets. Then, global exports tumbled 17.2% in 2020's first two months from the previous year. This year, China’s global trade surplus for January and February was $103.3 billion, compared with a $7.1 billion deficit in the same period last year. China’s trade surplus with the United States narrowed by 17.7% from the same time last year to $20.9 billion.

The company said Friday that it terminated channels of broadcasters Myawaddy Media, MRTV, WD Online Broadcasting, MWD Variety and MWD Myanmar. “We have terminated a number of channels and removed several videos from YouTube in accordance with our community guidelines and applicable laws,” YouTube said in an emailed statement. The decision by YouTube followed Facebook’s earlier announcement that it had removed all Myanmar military-linked pages from its site and from Instagram, which it also owns.

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)Facebook says it is lifting its ban on political and social-issue ads put in place after the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Political candidates, groups and others will be able to place ads on Facebook and Instagram beginning on Thursday. Facebook halted U.S. political ads when the polls closed on Nov. 3, an extension of an earlier restriction on new political ads in the week leading up to Election Day. “As a result, we plan to use the coming months to take a closer look at how these ads work on our service to see where further changes may be merited.”AdTwitter has banned political ads permanently.

Google ends sale of ads using individual web tracking data

On Wednesday, the company said it won't replace those cookies with another way of tracking individuals. Instead, Google proposes grouping together web users with similar interests and keeping web histories private on user devices. AdAnalysts say Facebook stands to lose billions of dollars if most iPhone users don’t grant the social network permission to track them. Ad“Apple and Amazon and Google have more diversified business models, where tracking is important but not central,” Sinnreich said.

As shoppers buy more of their clothes online, fewer retailers stand to win

And as those new purchasing habits stick, few apparel retailers stand to gain market share, leading to continued store closures and bankruptcies. Sales of apparel and footwear online increased 27.2% to $121.5 billion in 2020, according to an analysis released Thursday by Coresight Research. As that happened, the total market for clothes and shoes in the U.S. shrank roughly 12.1%, it said using Euromonitor estimates, as Americans have been purchasing fewer items for their wardrobes during the Covid pandemic. Coresight expects online apparel and footwear sales to either remain flat or grow low-single digits in 2021, as the total apparel market rebounds slightly, climbing around 7%. Coresight Chief Executive Deborah Weinswig said she expects many consumers are going to keep their new online shopping habits.

How to stop your AirPods from automatically connecting to your other Apple devices

Apple's new software can automatically switch your AirPods earbuds between devices as you move between them. For example, if you're listening to music on your iPhone, then walk to the living room and pick up your iPad to watch a video, the AirPods can automatically switch to the iPad without making you do anything. Sometimes when I'm sitting at my desk, for example, my AirPods randomly switch over from my iPhone, where I'm playing music, to a nearby iPad, which isn't playing anything. So I've found I prefer to just use the old method of manually choosing my AirPods when I switch devices. If you're having similar issues, here's how to turn off the auto-switch and go back to the old method.

It fixes a big problem I've noticed now that I'm using FaceTime a lot more to speak with family. Lawsuit: Southwest pilots streamed video from bathroom cam

A lawsuit filed against Southwest Airlines by a flight attendant alleges pilots on a 2017 flight had an iPad streaming video from a hidden camera in a bathroom in one of the airline's jets. Southwest responded Saturday by denying it places cameras in aircraft lavatories and by calling the 2017 incident an "inappropriate attempt at humor" not condoned by the company. The suit said Steinaker took a cellphone photo of the iPad video, provided the photo with a report to Southwest management and was warned by a supervisor to not tell anybody about the incident. According to the suit, Steinaker was warned, "if this got out, if this went public, no one, I mean no one, would ever fly our airline again."
