DETROIT – A wheel flung off a vehicle Thursday night on I-94 in Detroit and struck the windshields of a police vehicle and ambulance that were traveling in the other direction.
State police said the wheel came off of a 2004 Dodge Durango which was traveling eastbound on I-94 near Mount Elliott Avenue at about 9 p.m. Thursday. The wheel traveled into oncoming traffic, striking a Wayne County Community College police car and a Superior Ambulance vehicle that were traveling one behind the other. Police said they were not engaged in emergency driving at the time.

No injuries were reported.
The windshields on both vehicles were shattered by the wheel.
The driver of the Durango pulled over onto the side of the interstate. Police said she told investigators she did not realize the wheel went into oncoming traffic. She saw police and ambulance commotion on the other side of the median but did not think anything of it. She told police she didn't figure it out until she saw media reports. She only called a tow truck to come get the vehicle and left the scene.
State police were able to track down the woman after receiving an anonymous tip at their 911 call center. The Durango is her boyfriend's vehicle, police said. Investigators received confessions from both the woman and her boyfriend, state police said.
Meanwhile, police are working on locating the Durango. They will turn over findings from their investigation to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
