What Detroit's La SED is doing with its Cesar Chavez mural -- and why it matters
Mary Carmen Muñoz, executive director of La SED in Southwest Detroit, is responding to recent revelations of sexual abuse by Cesar Chavez, whose mural has long stood as a community landmark. In the wake of a New York Times story exposing Chavez’s misconduct, institutions nationwide are removing his name from honors and celebrations. La SED will not erase the mural but plans to modify it in collaboration with artists to reflect both the broader legacy of farmworkers and the complexity of Chavez’s past.
