How Detroit is using small grocery stores to fight food insecurity neighborhood by neighborhood
Detroit’s Green Grocer Program is supporting small-format grocery stores, like Kandie’s Mini Mart, to address food insecurity in neighborhoods by providing affordable, fresh foods. Entrepreneurs such as Jacquisha Blackwell are engaging the community in shaping store offerings, with support from grants that help purchase essential equipment. The program, managed by the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, now supports 18 sites citywide and aims to reach every district with locally owned stores focused on fresh, high-quality food. Residents credit these stores with making a significant positive impact on food access for all ages.
