‘He went under 3 or 4 times’: Artist rescues 10-year-old boy from drowning at Belle Isle

A 10-year-old boy fell into deep water while fishing on Belle Isle and struggled to stay afloat, prompting his older brother to jump in and attempt a rescue. Neither the supervising adult, Angela Briscoe, nor Detroit artist and art teacher Rashaun Rucker, who was also present, could swim, but Rucker used a fishing net to pull the boy to safety after he went under several times. Both boys were unharmed, and the incident highlighted the importance of water safety and swim lessons, prompting Briscoe and Rucker to pursue swimming classes. Resources for local swim lessons were shared following the event.
