'Trying to figure everything out': Spirit workers and travelers left in the lurch at DTW

Spirit Airlines, once Detroit Metro Airport’s second-largest carrier, abruptly shut down, leaving thousands unemployed and stranding travelers like Hisben Tchibinda, who arrived for a flight only to learn the airline was out of business. The closure followed months of declining passenger numbers, with Spirit representing a shrinking share of departures at DTW. With Spirit gone, travelers face fewer options and higher prices, while former employees are left seeking new opportunities.
