She was told there was no hope. Then surgeons pulled off a Michigan medical first

Surgeons at Henry Ford Health in Michigan performed the state's first combined intestine and kidney transplant on Bri Dery, who had suffered from health complications since contracting a parasite in 2008. After an initial intestinal transplant in 2017 failed due to rejection and kidney damage from anti-rejection drugs, doctors determined a combined transplant was her best option. The complex, ten-hour procedure required careful coordination between transplant teams and was successful, with Bri now recovering well. Physicians believe the strong donor match will lower her risk of rejection, and they plan to consider similar combined transplants for future patients.
