Family sues Detroit officer who shot teen at 2024 block party, left her disabled
A Detroit family has filed a lawsuit against Officer Verona Shaw after she allegedly fired into a crowd at a 2024 block party, striking 19-year-old Rain Williams in the head and leaving her permanently disabled. The suit claims Shaw tripped and fired multiple shots while responding to gunfire, and that her actions were reckless, with body camera footage confirming she was the only officer to discharge her weapon. Another victim, Imani Peterson, died weeks later, and Williams now faces lifelong disabilities. Shaw’s defense cites governmental immunity, but the family alleges a lack of accountability and communication from the police department.
