Metro Detroit extreme heat warning: Heat index, air quality alert and Fourth of July forecast

Metro Detroit is experiencing an extreme heat dome, with high-pressure conditions trapping hot air and suppressing rain and wind, resulting in dangerously high temperatures and humidity. An extreme heat warning and air quality alert are in effect, with forecasters urging residents—especially those with respiratory conditions—to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The heat index, which factors in both temperature and humidity, has made conditions feel much hotter than actual temperatures, and the warning is expected to intensify. Millions across the U.S. are affected by this persistent heat wave, which meteorologists say is not likely to subside soon.
