Full presser: Mayor Sheffield, Detroit health chief addresses wildfire smoke threat

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield and Chief Public Health Officer Ali Abazeed updated the public on the city’s response to hazardous air quality caused by Canadian wildfire smoke, which pushed Air Quality Index readings above 600 in some areas. The city has distributed over 112,000 masks, issued emergency health alerts, and closed administrative offices while maintaining essential services. Residents are urged to stay indoors, limit outdoor activity, and wear N95 or KN95 masks if they must go outside. Many city services remain accessible online as in-person operations are temporarily suspended.
