Detroit HBCU 20th anniversary weekend

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities organization brings together students, parents, and community leaders to help young minds excel beyond the classroom through networking, service, and scholarship support. They first stepped into Detroit 20 years ago. Those two decades are worth celebrating for four days. Starting July 23, a professional networking event brings together alumni, entrepreneurs, and professionals; then community and culture take center stage during Friday’s kickoff event. On Saturday, the organization’s honors program recognizes those who have made a positive impact on the group’s community. The weekend wraps up with a cookout and giveaway — where students will get what they need for the new year. That means supplies and the encouragement of their colleagues and community. The Detroit branch’s President Sean Rouse and Vice President Nikki Taylor joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the positive impact this has had and look ahead to a new year.
