Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield talks ‘Occupy the Summer’ initiative
Detroit is wrapping up a 10-week summer initiative to keep young people engaged, provide positive activities in neighborhoods, and help prevent summer violence. Mayor Mary Sheffield launched “Occupy the Summer” at the start of the season, with programming that included late-night basketball, Friday night activations, giveaways and extended recreation center hours. The initiative concludes Friday with a summer finale and back-to-school celebration at the Diehl Club from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will feature music, activities, community resources and school giveaways for Detroit families as the city closes out the summer program.
