Old-growth red pine forest discovered in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

An entire stand of old-growth red pine trees — some estimated to be up to 400 years old — was discovered recently by a Michigan DNR forester during a routine forest checkup in the Upper Peninsula. Located near Lake Superior in the easter part of the UP, the ancient pines were largely wiped out during the logging boom of the 1800s, but somehow, these trees survived.
