Metro Detroit weather: Rain and snow showers to start the week

More rain chances this week

DETROIT – Good Monday morning! Storm Tracker 4 is keeping a close eye and handle on rain and snow showers moving closer and closer to Metro Detroit but we start the early morning hours on the dry side with mid 30s as you head out with a lighter wind SE 5-10mph which will pick up later today.

The timing is everything for the wet weather because it’s cool enough over SE Lower Michigan and Southern Ontario for some snow to mix with rain in the leading edge of the Monday showers.

Expect a rain/snow mix by about 6 a.m. switching to rain later in the morning and this could be mainly rain for some as it moves through here. Snow will want to stick to your car, to grassy surfaces, but it will struggle to stick to the streets especially with most of our area near or above freezing.

Parts of our West and South Zones may get into the action before 6 a.m., but most of us see more trouble coming around or just after 6 a.m., as the mix will be trending to the rain category with snow showers likely lingering north of M 59.

The computer model data has not had a great time handling today’s wet weather with at least one model keeping snow showers mixing in and out of the day’s rain with minor accumulations of an inch or two through the morning and early afternoon but that just doesn’t seem like the right play.

This will be more rain than snow mainly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with scattered rain showers after that. Highs will struggle in the clouds and showers, so expect lower 40s slowly warming late in the afternoon with winds SE 7-15 gusting 20-25mph at times.

Be careful driving with pooling and ponding late morning into the afternoon but both our morning and evening commutes will be on the dryer side.

Sunset is at 8:03 p.m.

We should get a break from the Spring showers on Tuesday around Metro Detroit and we will warm without a ton of sunshine. Look for morning lows in the low 40s and highs heading into the mid 50s under partly sunny skies in a light wind SE 5-12mph and an isolated shower or two in the afternoon.

We have a shot at hitting 60 degrees both Wednesday and Thursday but we are going to need some help. The warming winds will be cranking Wednesday drawing in warmer air, but also bringing in rain showers mainly in the late morning and afternoon. We will likely fall just short of 60 degrees on Wednesday due to thickening clouds and those showers.

Thursday should be the brightest day of the week with sun through the morning and early afternoon and perhaps our best shot at 60 degrees this week however, rain showers race in by mid to late afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front and the timing again will be key to our high temps Thursday.

The late week cold front will bring the chance for a light mix of rain and snow showers Friday morning as temps dip down into the 30s, and that is something we will watch closely.

The Detroit Tigers home opener is Friday, and it looks like Metro Detroit will see scattered rain showers and middle to upper 40s during the game. There’s plenty of time for a shift in the forecast and again, we’ll keep you posted. The games for next weekend look better but still cooler in the mid 40s to near 50 degrees.
