Cold, some sun for Sunday before messy Monday in Metro Detroit

Wintry mix heading to Southeast Michigan Monday

You’ve had grit to endure the arctic air and back-to-back rounds of snow. Now, although it is still cold, the weather is calming just in time to cheer on the Lions and the Red Wings on Sunday.

How cold? Saturday night’s lows in Metro Detroit will be around 10 degrees, but wind chills will dip to 0 to 5 degrees below zero. Northwesterly winds will be 4 to 8 mph. Besides the chilly air, it will be mostly cloudy.

Sunday

Sunday will also be cold, but it will be partly cloudy. Expect periods of sunshine, especially in the afternoon. A stray flurry is possible. Morning wind chills will be in the single digits below zero and above zero, but the afternoon will see improvement with wind chills in the teens. By tomorrow evening, wind chills will fall back to the single digits. The actual air temperature will be in the lower 20s in the afternoon. Westerly winds will be 5 to 10 mph. Lows will be in the teens.

Monday

A warming trend will begin for the workweek, but foul weather comes with it. Snow showers will move in by midday Monday. During the evening, we will start to see a wintry mix with chances of sleet and freezing rain. Light ice accumulation is possible. Highs will be around 32 degrees, which is the freezing point. Any ice accumulation will lead to slick roads, while the ice coupled with breezy conditions could down a few weak or already broken branches.

Tuesday

There is a chance of rain and freezing rain Tuesday morning, which would impact the commute. The wintry mix is likely to transition to rain by the afternoon with highs in the mid 30s.

Mild and showery stretch

During the rest of the week, temperatures will be above average and range from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees. There will be a chance of rain for the rest of the workweek. Only a few isolated showers will be possible on Saturday with some areas staying dry.

The normal high and low temperatures for the rest of January in Detroit are 32 and 18 degrees, respectively.
