Severe weather possible amid turbulent week: What to know for Metro Detroit

Storms likely as temps rise, fall

4Warn Weather – Monday morning begins with clear and cool conditions.

We’ll have more sun than clouds today with highs rising above average, into the low 50s. It will be a mild day.

Tonight’s sunset is at 6:19 p.m.

We’ll turn a bit breezy tonight with a slight chance of a sprinkle or two. Otherwise, conditions will be cloudy and mild overnight.

Severe storms possible

We are looking at record warmth Tuesday with highs expected in the low 60s. The current record high stands at 63 degrees set back in 1976.

There is a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) to slight risk (level 2 of 5) of severe thunderstorms Tuesday night. Storms are possible as a strong low pressure system moves across Southeast Michigan after midnight and into Wednesday morning.

Storms are expected to become more widespread in our area around 2 a.m. Wednesday. The storms will push north and east, and should move out of the region by around 6 a.m.

Gusty winds and hail are the primary threats during these storms -- although, rotating storms can’t be ruled out.

There will be more rain chances after 7 a.m. Scattered showers are possible across the region, and should clear out by the early afternoon.

Those in more northern parts of Metro Detroit, however, could see some snowflakes mixing in. That just goes to show you how quickly we’re going to cool down on Wednesday.

Temps quickly drop Wednesday

A quick return to winter conditions will occur with temperatures falling sharply on Wednesday. A few flakes can’t be ruled out Wednesday afternoon.

Winds will be whipping. Cold air will surge in from the northwest as gusts reach 40 mph.

Colder temperatures will continue Thursday, followed by a return of above-average temperatures this weekend as we warm back up to either side of 60 degrees.

Elsewhere ...

Nationally, a strong winter storm will continue to progress into the Northern Rockies bringing heavy mountain snow combined with strong winds, which will produce near-blizzard conditions. Dry, gusty winds will create widespread critical fire weather conditions in the southern High Plains on Monday.
