Air Quality Advisory issued for most of Southeast Michigan
If you are making plans for Independence Day in Metro Detroit or anywhere in Southeast Michigan, it is a good idea to check the air quality.
An Air Quality Advisory is in effect across most of Southeast Michigan for July 4th, including Livingston, Washtenaw, Lenawee, Monroe, Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and St. Clair counties.
The primary concern is smoke—both from ongoing wildfires and the increased pollution expected as fireworks light up the night on Friday. Smoke from neighborhood and professional fireworks displays is expected to combine with the wildfire smoke that is already drifting over the Great Lakes. This could push air quality to moderate levels, which may impact those most sensitive to air conditions: people with underlying health conditions, babies, and seniors. Hilliard recommends that anyone in these sensitive categories be especially mindful throughout the holiday.
Late Thursday
An isolated rain shower will be possible before 9 p.m. Thursday. Otherwise, expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies through sunset at 9:12 p.m. in Downtown Detroit and 9:13 p.m. in Romulus. Skies will be mostly clear at night, with lows in the lower- to mid-60s.
Hot and mostly clear for July 4th and the holiday weekend
Independence Day (Friday)
You can expect a classic summer feel for the holiday, with lots of sunshine and some heat building in. Highs on the Fourth of July are expected to be near 90 degrees, and conditions look mostly clear leading into the afternoon. There is a low chance of a couple of pop-up showers or an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon and early evening. That low chance should come to an end before 10 p.m., when many fireworks shows are scheduled to start. Temperatures will be around 80 degrees, with mostly clear skies at that time. Winds will be out of the southeast and south around 5 mph.
Nighttime skies will remain mostly clear, with lows around 70 degrees.
Saturday and Sunday
Heat will stick around into the weekend as well, with Saturday and Sunday both expected to reach into the lower-90s. Some clouds and a chance for scattered showers may return to the forecast for Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday morning, but the main story for the holiday will be the warmth and the air quality risks. Lows will be in the upper-60s and lower-70s.
