Southeast Michigan is closing out Saturday with more summerlike heat, topping out at 85 degrees at Detroit Metro Airport. That is 15 degrees above the normal high of 70 degrees, and just shy of the record 88 degrees set on Sept. 27, 1891. Saturday’s warmth felt more like July than early fall.

Clear skies will keep conditions mild Saturday night, with overnight lows in the mid-50s.

Sunday

Sunday brings more sunshine and another round of above-average warmth, with highs reaching the lower-80s.

The Detroit Lions will host the Cleveland Browns at 1 p.m. Sunday at Ford Field. While conditions will be climate-controlled indoors, tailgating fans outside will contend with bright sunshine and rising temperatures. Morning readings will climb through the 60s; and by kickoff, temperatures will be in the mid-70s. People should wear sunscreen, sunglasses and hats to protect against the UV rays and warmth. Northerly winds of 5 mph will be great for drone flying or getting on the water.

Workweek

The stretch of unseasonable warmth continues Monday, with highs near 80. A change arrives midweek, as highs fall back toward seasonal norms around 70 degrees by Wednesday and Thursday. Lows will be in the upper-40s to lower-50s.

Next Weekend

Next weekend looks comfortable. Plan for a mix of sunshine and clouds and highs in the mid- to upper-70s.

Tracking the Tropics

Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. Humberto was about 685 miles south-southeast of Bermuda at 5 p.m. Saturday. The hurricane is not expected to make landfall, but it is creating dangerous surf and rip currents for the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda. The swells will impact the U.S. East Coast starting Monday.

A tropical depression, which was centered over The Bahamas, was forecast to become Tropical Storm Imelda no later than early Sunday. Imelda would likely strengthen into a hurricane late Monday or Tuesday.

On Saturday evening, the system was slowly drifting northwestward. Tropical storm watches and warnings were posted for parts of Florida’s east coast. Conditions are expected to begin deteriorating Sunday. Travelers from Detroit to Florida should monitor conditions for possible delays and disruptions.
