Wind machine revving up as temps dive in Metro Detroit

Gale warnings posted for part of Lake Huron

After Saturday’s November warmup pushed temperatures into the mid-60s across Metro Detroit, a blast of colder air will sweep in to end the weekend with a much different feel.

Sunday

The average high temperatures for this point in November are in the upper-40s, but Sunday will fall short of that mark. Forecast highs only reach the lower- to mid-40s, and the strong northwest wind will make it feel closer to the 30s throughout the day. Wind gusts are expected to top 30 mph and could reach 40 mph.

There will be a mix of sunshine and clouds. While most of the region stays dry, brief flurries or sprinkles are possible across the Thumb — including Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair counties — where the cold air is more pronounced.

The gusty winds prompted Gale Warnings for part of Lake Huron through Sunday night. Small Craft Advisories were also in effect for the nearshore waters of Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair and western Lake Erie as waves build and winds strengthen. Gusts over open water may reach 35 to 40 knots with wave heights climbing between 12 and 16 feet, and occasional higher waves up to 23 feet on Lake Huron.

Drivers should expect a noticeable wind impact on high-profile vehicles, and those heading to the lakeshore will encounter choppy water and hazardous boating conditions.

The colder trend continues into Sunday night, with temperatures dipping into the upper-20s across parts of the region.

Looking Ahead

The start of the workweek remains breezy and chilly before a gradual warmup returns around mid-week.
