Metro Detroit starts the workweek with bitter cold, before another round of light snow arrives Tuesday.

Sunday morning’s snowfall was modest but enough to coat area roads. Metro Detroit saw totals up to around 1.5 inches. Tuesday could see similarly light accumulations.

Before the snow returns, the cold will demand everyone’s attention. Wind chills late Sunday night into Monday morning will fall into the single digits and even below zero in a few spots, making for a harsh start to the day for commuters and students heading back to school. Actual lows early Monday morning will drop into the single digits and teens across Southeast Michigan under partly cloudy skies.

Monday will be partly cloudy and cold, with temperatures gradually climbing from the teens during the morning to the mid-20s during the afternoon. The low wind chills will be the main concern for children waiting at bus stops. By late Monday night, clouds increase, and temperatures slowly rise as a new system approaches from the northwest.

More snow Tuesday

Light snow is expected to develop Tuesday, during the morning and another round in the evening, with the potential for a dusting to nearly two inches across Southeast Michigan. While this is not a significant snowfall, any accumulation during the morning can create slick roads, particularly on bridges and untreated surfaces. Plan for the possibility of slower travel during the Tuesday morning commute and allow extra time for school drop-offs.

Some mixed precipitation or rain may follow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as temperatures rise above freezing. That transition may limit snow totals, but it could also produce wet and slushy travel early Wednesday. As temperatures fall behind the system later Wednesday, any lingering moisture may change back to light snow, although widespread accumulation appears limited.

Temperatures briefly moderate Wednesday, with highs climbing into the upper 30s—close to average for early December—but another surge of cold air pushes in by Thursday. Highs Thursday through the weekend will mostly hold in the 20s; and morning lows will fall into the teens and, in some northern and outlying areas, single digits. That means another stretch of frigid mornings and icy patches possible, especially on less-traveled roads.
