Michigan winter storm forecast: Snow, freezing rain next for Metro Detroit -- when, how much

1-5 inches of snow before rain arrives

National Weather Service 24-hour forecast map.

Another hit of winter is moving into Southeast Michigan on Tuesday night, and it could create a mess for travel.

This is on top of accumulating snow in Metro Detroit on Sunday and Tuesday morning.

Winter storm in Metro Detroit:

Here’s what to expect next -- and when -- from 4Warn Weather’s Ashlee Baracy:

Round two is expected to be messier, with snow returning after 8 p.m. and changing between wet snow, freezing rain, and rain for parts of Southeast Michigan overnight through Wednesday morning.

One to five inches is expected (with the higher totals expected in areas near the Thumb), but the rain and snow mix makes it difficult to estimate accumulation.

The rain/snow line is highly sensitive, which makes forecasting snow totals across the Metro area tricky. It will be blustery with gusts up to 30 mph and temperatures will fall into Wednesday morning, where a re-freeze will be a concern.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Thumb region from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow totals in that area will be between 3 to 5 inches from this evening through tomorrow.
