Messy morning commute, subzero wind chills in Metro Detroit with more snow on the way

Subzero wind chills drape Metro Detroit today with additional accumulating snow on Friday

We have extended the 4Warn Weather Alert through this morning due to poor road conditions and wind chills below zero.

Yesterday’s snow event was an overachiever to say the least due to lake effect moisture which was grossly underestimated with all model data. As we look ahead, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Huron and Sanilac counties until 10AM.

Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches remain possible through mid-morning. Lake effect snow showers taper off by midday, with a small window of clearing possible this afternoon. Highs will be about ten degrees below average, in the low 20s. However, the wind chills at best will be in the single digits with the brisk wind.

More Snow

The snow isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, we will be adding more to what is out there. A series of clipper systems bring much colder air and accumulating snow potential to Southeast Michigan Friday into the weekend. Friday alone could spit out another 1 to 3 inches. There is potential for gusts over 30 MPH on MLK Day as one of these clippers tracks across the area.

Deep Freeze

Colder than average conditions continue over the next two weeks. Highs this weekend will only be in the 20s with subzero wind chills expected early next week. Highs next Tuesday will only be in the teens.
