Child hospitalized after shooting self with unsecured handgun on Detroit’s west side

DETROIT – A child is recovering in the hospital after she accidentally shot herself with an unsecured gun inside a Detroit home, police said.

At around 9 a.m. on March 1, officers responded to a home in the 8800 block of Artesian after a call about a shooting.

According to police, the child found an unsecured gun inside the home, was playing with it and shot herself.

She was taken to the hospital by EMS and is expected to be okay.

Police said an adult was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

An investigation is underway.
