Southeast Michigan remains under a 4Warn Weather Alert through Saturday morning as dangerously cold air settles over the region, bringing bitter wind chills and lingering snow showers.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for all of Southeast Michigan until 10 a.m.
Saturday, with wind chills expected to dip as low as 25 degrees below zero at times.
The cold poses a serious risk for frostbite and hypothermia, especially for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Snow showers are also a concern into Friday morning, as bands of lake-effect snow move across parts of the region. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, the snow could quickly reduce visibility and create slick road conditions, particularly underneath heavier snow bands.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution, especially during the morning commute.
The combination of snow and extreme cold increases the potential for hazardous conditions, even when accumulation totals are minor.
Roads can become icy in a short period of time, and visibility may drop rapidly in snow showers.
How to stay safe
People are encouraged to take precautions during the cold stretch Friday and Saturday.
It is recommended to dress in warm layers, cover exposed skin, limit time outdoors, and check on elderly neighbors and those who may be vulnerable to the cold.
Pets should be brought indoors, and anyone who sees an animal left outside in dangerous conditions is encouraged to contact local animal control.
Next round of snow
While temperatures begin to improve later Saturday morning, attention will increasingly turn to the next weather system.
The 4Warn Weather team is monitoring the potential for a snowstorm on Sunday, which could bring several inches of snow to parts of Southeast Michigan.
If that system develops as expected, snow-covered and messy roads could linger into the Monday morning commute.
Stay informed by downloading the 4Warn Weather app, remain cautious on the roads, and prepare for changing conditions as the region moves through a period of cold weather and additional snow chances.
