Here are some cold weather reminders:

  • When it’s this cold, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in just half an hour.
  • Make sure to keep your pets inside as much as you can or make sure they have proper shelter, dry bedding and unfrozen water.
  • If possible, try to limit your time outdoors. If you must be outside dress in layers and be aware of the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
  • Frostbite signs include a loss of feeling in the affected area with the extremities (fingers, toes, ears, and nose) being the most susceptible.
  • Hypothermia signs include uncontrollable shivering, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and exhaustion.
  • Consider checking on those who may be more sensitive to cold weather including older adults, neighbors and anyone without reliable heat.
  • If using a portable heating device, follow all safety instructions. Never use a generator or grill indoors and be sure carbon monoxide detectors are working.

Temperatures Tuesday afternoon will be in the mid to upper teens with wind chills in the lower single digits. Keep the above tips in mind as Southeast Michigan looks to stay cold through the week.
