Snow lingers across Metro Detroit as cold pattern holds

Highs in 20s this week in Southeast Michigan

4Warn Weather – Light snow continued across Metro Detroit into Monday evening, building on totals that had already exceeded a couple of inches in some communities since morning.

Snow has persisted because a slow-moving trough is crossing the region, drawing in additional moisture from the Great Lakes.

That setup is allowing light snow showers to redevelop and linger, rather than shutting down as earlier waves moved through.

Lake-enhanced bands are also contributing to steady, light accumulation.

Additional snowfall is possible through the night, with another inch or more in parts of Southeast Michigan. Isolated locations could pick up closer to two inches, especially near and along the I-69 corridor from Lapeer County west toward Genesee County.

Extended snowfall could create slick spots on Tuesday morning’s commute, particularly on untreated roads and bridges.

Snowfall rates are expected to remain light but steady enough to continue accumulating on already snow-covered surfaces.

Cold air will remain in place through much of the week. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the teens and single digits, while daytime highs stay below normal, generally in the 20s through midweek.

Wind chills will remain a factor.

For students heading to the bus stop Tuesday morning, temperatures will be in the teens with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of flurries.

Conditions remain cold through the day, with readings around 20 degrees late in the morning and highs around 25 degrees during the afternoon.

Light snow showers are possible early, but no significant additional accumulation is expected.

What do the groundhogs say?

The snowy weather comes as Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania saw his shadow Monday morning, signaling six more weeks of winter.

Michigan’s own Woody the Woodchuck also retreated, reinforcing a folkloric forecast of continued cold and snow across the state.

The weather may also affect travel for fans heading downtown Tuesday night for the Denver Nuggets-Detroit Pistons matchup at Little Caesars Arena.

Temperatures will be in the upper teens around tipoff, falling into the mid-teens by late evening under mostly cloudy skies.

After a brief lull in snowfall Tuesday and Wednesday, the next chance for accumulating snow arrives late Thursday into Friday, when another system may bring several rounds of light to moderate snow to southeast Michigan.

Temperatures will briefly rebound closer to seasonal levels by Friday before turning sharply colder again over the weekend, with highs dropping back into the teens and wind chills becoming an issue once more.

Drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel and use caution on snow-covered and icy roads as wintry weather continues across the region.
