Summer-like heat and humidity are building across Metro Detroit today, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s this afternoon. While much of the day will remain dry, making for a great pool day. Folks should prepare for increasing thunderstorm chances later this evening and through the first half of the weekend.
Most communities across Southeast Michigan are expected to stay rain-free through approximately 5 p.m. before scattered showers and thunderstorms begin to develop this evening. Severe weather is not expected to be widespread, but an isolated strong to severe storm cannot be ruled out this afternoon and tonight.
The more active weather arrives Saturday. More widespread rainfall is possible Saturday morning before a brief lull develops around midday. Additional showers and thunderstorms are then expected to redevelop during the afternoon and evening, especially between noon and 6 p.m. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Southeast Michigan under at least a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather on Saturday. Areas closer to the Michigan-Ohio border, including Monroe County, are under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5). Any stronger storms that develop could produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter.
Despite the storm chances, temperatures will remain well into the 80s through the weekend. Sunday is shaping up to be the better of the two weekend days, featuring mostly sunny skies and pleasant conditions with highs in the mid-80s. Looking ahead, the weather pattern remains active. A hotter and stormier setup develops by the middle of next week. Temperatures could surge into the 90s later next week, accompanied by periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms.
