DETROIT – Severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday throughout Metro Detroit, with a threat of damaging winds, lightning and downpours.

Here's the latest information from the Local 4Casters:

"That steamier air mass is also much more unstable, so the scattered thunderstorms that develop this afternoon could be severe, with damaging wind gusts, lightning and torrential downpours the primary threats.

"However, something that I’ll have to monitor through the day is our developing wind field both at the surface and aloft.  Moderately strong west-southwesterly winds aloft will overspread the area this afternoon. However, surface winds will be from the south.

"That veering of the wind direction as you go from the surface upward is called wind shear, and some models project enough shear this afternoon to generate supercell thunderstorms, which would then bring potential tornadoes into play. The upper air data from this morning’s 8:00 a.m. weather balloon launches at our surrounding National Weather Service offices will be critical to this part of the forecast."
