Help Me Hank: Be on the lookout for snow removal scams

DETROIT – Thursday morning’s snow showers through Metro Detroit reminded many residents about the long winter that may be ahead.

For many, that means paying a snow removal company to help clear a path at their homes. Unfortunately, it also means an influx of snow removal scams.

Snow is coming back to Michigan and local scam artists know. Local 4′s consumer investigative reporter has already been told of snow removal contractors going door-to-door in Oakland and Monroe counties.

Laura Blankenship, with the Better Business Bureau, fielded calls from concerned customers Thursday and she wants residents to read the fine print before signing a contract for snow removal.

Almost every year, the Help Me Hank team chases down a company for not living up to the terms of the contact.

In 2018, Attorney General Bill Schuette issued a cease-and-desist order to an Oakland County snowplowing operation for violating Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act.

Tips for finding a reputable company:

  • Ask your neighbors to see if they have referrals
  • Research companies online and check customer reviews
  • Make sure the company is licensed and insured.
  • Contact the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has any unresolved complaints. You can search on its website here.
