Teach your child how to interact with dogs

Steps to building happy relationships with furry friends

Dogs are a special part of the family and creating healthy and happy relationships between fur babies and human kids is key.

Lidia Vesterfelt with Michigan Humane appeared on “Live In The D” to share advice on teaching children to appropriately interact with dogs.

Lidia talked about the importance of making it a positive experience for both the child and the dog. An example she shared is including children in things like treats and mealtime to create a positive association.

Lidia also stressed the importance of not petting a dog when they are eating or sleeping. Another recommendation was to have a “kid-free zone” where the dog can go if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

It’s also important to teach kids about body language that signals that you should give the dog space and not interact with them, such as a tucked tail, flattened ears, or lip licking.

Michigan Humane has multiple furry friends if you’re looking to adopt. Watch the video above to meet a dog named Bella who is around 9 years old and needs a forever home.
