DETROIT – Police said a man was shot and killed Thursday while walking into a funeral home on Detroit's east side.
The shooting happened outside Cantrell Funeral Home at 10400 Mack Avenue, police said.
Officials said someone opened fire on the sidewalk just outside the funeral home. Witnesses said the victim was first shot in the lobby, then stumbled outside, where the shooter continued to shoot him.
Police say incident related to shooting of 5 people last week
Sources said the incident is related to another shooting from Nov. 30, when five people were shot as they stood outside a house at Nashville and Gunston. Police said someone circled the block numerous times and eventually opened fire on the group, killing one man.
Thursday's victim was at the funeral home to pay his respects to a shooting victim.
Police didn't think last week's shooting was random, and they believe the same shooter came to the funeral home Thursday to finish what they started.
3 possible suspects involved
Police said there are three possible suspects involved in the shooting. They are searching for a red Honda or Toyota that fled at a high speed from the funeral home.
There might be another person who was hurt in the shooting. Police said it's unclear if the injured person is one of the suspected shooters.
"We believe that there might be another injury, yes," Detroit police Capt. Mark Thornton said.
Police said there are possibly two weapons that were involved, based on evidence.
"(It's) senseless," Thornton said. "This is ridiculous. After 32 years on the job, when are we going to come together as a community to say, 'Enough is enough'?"
No weapons have been found at the funeral home.
