70-year-old retired Detroit police officer severely beaten in Wayne

2 Garden City men charged

WAYNE, Mich. – A 70-year-old man was beaten early Sunday outside of a bar in Wayne.

Roy Huston, a 30-year veteran of the Detroit police department, was outside at 2:30 a.m. when three people walked by him. Words were exchanged before a fight broke out, police said.

Huston was hit and stabbed, police said, and a radio was also used to beat him.

Neighbors and employees at the bar near Michigan Avenue and Newberry Street said Huston lives at a retirement building behind the bar, and he would often sit outside with his dog and listen to the radio at night.

His son, Maurice Huston, said his father has defensive stab wounds on his hands and arms.

"He's still in pain," his son said.

The elder Huston just started talking yesterday, and will likely be in the hospital for another week.

Two Garden City men were charged in connection with the beating.

Ryan Fletcher, 35, and Jacob Rose, 23, were charged with assault with intent to commit murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Fletcher and Rose were arraigned Tuesday, and their bonds were set at $100,000 each. The third person arrested was later releases after the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office denied issuing charges.

Police said there is no evidence the crime was racially motivated.
