Distracted driver crashes into Grand Rapids church after looking at tablet behind the wheel

Police say the man overcorrected while trying to avoid a mailbox

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A 32-year-old man was seriously injured after reportedly driving a truck into a Grand Rapids church Friday morning.

According to authorities, the man was looking at a tablet while driving before swerving to avoid a mailbox, overcorrected and crossed into oncoming traffic before crashing into Trinity Congregational Church.

Police said the driver and a passenger -- a 33-year-old woman -- were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Michigan is one of dozens of states that has a hands-free driving law on the books.

The crash remains under investigation.

Officials with Trinity Congregational Church said they will need remodeling.
