Detroit Jazz Festival cancels remaining performances due to severe weather

Severe thunderstorms hit Downtown Detroit

DETROIT – The Detroit Jazz Festival has canceled the remainder of this year's performances due to severe weather in Downtown Detroit, organizers announced.

The performances were originally delayed, but organizers decided to cancel around 8 p.m.

Here's a statement from the Detroit Jazz Festival:

"Unfortunately, due to the continuation of dangerous weather in and near downtown Detroit, the Detroit Jazz Festival presented by Quicken Loans is forced to cancel the remainder of its performances for this year’s event. While every effort was made to delay the remaining acts, the storm became more organized and stronger as time passed and radar indicates it will continue to impact several counties throughout the evening. For the safety of all those in attendance, we evacuate the performance sites when lightning is within six miles; radar shows that the storm continues to produce high winds and lightning in the immediate area, creating a potentially unsafe environment near the open stages. We sincerely apologize for and are intensely disappointed by this situation, but safety will always take precedence.

"We ask our attendees to use caution when returning to their homes or hotels for the evening, and hope all attendees had a memorable time celebrating jazz with us in Detroit this weekend
