Royal Oak School District apologizes after mass email mistake exposes some personal information

District immediately shuts down access to information including passwords

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Royal Oak School District took action after a mass email was accidentally sent out containing private information.

A file containing Mistar ParentConnect pins and passwords, students names and grades, and addresses was sent out to Royal Oak High School seniors and their parents.

“The district did a great job letting us know and shutting it down,” said parent Nicole Reynolds.

The district said shortly after the email, it shut the portals down and did a mass reset, meaning parents will have to change their passwords for the next time they log in.

“Mistakes happen. And they’re pretty good with things like that, getting in front of it and resolving it quickly,” said parent Melvin Jones.

While some parents are remaining calm, others are freaking out.

“I just think it’s ridiculous. This should not happen at a high school. It shouldn’t happen at a school period,” said parent Amber Mitchell after learning of the mistake.

The district is apologizing for the error and is asking the seniors and their parents who received the email to delete it and then delete it from their trash folder as well.
