Highly decorated Shelby Township police sergeant died suddenly on duty

Criminal or suspicious activity not suspected

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Shelby Township Police Department announced the sudden death of Sergeant Daniel Kammerzell on Saturday.

According to Shelby Township police, Sgt. Kammerzell was found unresponsive in his patrol car Saturday afternoon.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police say his passing does not involve any suspicious or criminal circumstances.

Sgt. Kammerzell was highly decorated. Prior to his service in Shelby Township, he worked for the Detroit Police Department.

“Throughout his career he was an Evidence Technician, a Field Training Officer, Detective, Range Instructor, training coordinator, founding member and Assistant Team Leader of the Shelby Township Tactical Response Unit along with being a member of Metro Macomb SWAT,” said the police department.

He was also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Shelby Township Police department says Sgt. Kammerzell always came to work in a great mood, was always cracking jokes and making everyone laugh.

“We thank you Sergeant Kammerzell for your dedication to this community. Rest in peace, brother, you will be greatly missed.”
