Shots fired

Police reported at 8:18 p.m. Monday (Feb. 13) that shots had been fired in the area of Berkey Hall, which is just south of Grand River Avenue.

Everyone in the area was asked to shelter in place while police search for the shooter.

A second shooting incident was reported nearby at the MSU student union.

Police said Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall, the MSU Union, and Berkey Hall have all been cleared and secured.

5 people injured

MSU Police reported that a total of five people were transported to Sparrow Hospital. Some of them have life-threatening injuries, according to interim Deputy MSU Police Chief Chris Rozman.

Michigan State Police asked friends and family members not to drive up to the campus area. Several officers with long guns are searching for the shooter in the dark.

“Please do not go to MSU right now,” Michigan State Police tweeted. “Yes, it’s hard to do when you have loved ones on campus or adjacent to the campus. But it is far too dangerous as this armed suspect is moving in the area and police attempt to take them into custody. As always, scanner traffic is inaccurate.”

Shooter information

Police don’t have much confirmed information about the suspected shooter.

The shooter was last seen heading north from the MSU student union. He was wearing red shoes, a jean jacket, and a ball cap, according to Rozman.

It appears there is only one shooter, according to authorities.

Campus activities canceled

Michigan State University Police said around 10:45 p.m. Monday that all campus activities have been canceled for 48 hours.

That includes classes, athletics, and all campus-related activities.

“Please do not come to campus tomorrow,” MSU Police said.
