Former Detroit police officer charged with manslaughter in death of 71-year-old man

Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, issued a personal bond of $100,000

DETROIT – A now-fired Detroit police officer accused of killing a 71-year-old man by punching him in the face appeared in court Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown was arraigned on a charge of manslaughter. He was issued a personal bond of $100,000.

The charge stems from a Sept. 1 incident at the Garden Bowl, located off Woodward Avenue.

Brown was dispatched to the location on reports of a 71-year-old man who was acting disorderly and refusing to leave. Prosecutors said there was a verbal confrontation between Brown and the victim before Brown punched the 71-year-old in the face, which caused him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

The man, identified as Daryl Vance, was taken to a hospital, where he died almost three weeks later. The medical examiner said his cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Brown was suspended within days of the incident.

The Detroit Police Department confirmed that Brown was terminated from his position, but he is appealing the decision.

Brown was issued a personal bond of $100,000.
