Key hearing delayed in Samantha Woll murder case

Prosecutors requested more time

DETROIT – The probable cause conference for the man accused of killing Samantha Woll was postponed Wednesday, Dec. 27.

Woll, a well-known leader in Detroit’s Jewish community, was found stabbed to death outside her home Oct. 21. According to authorities, 40-year-old Woll returned home from a wedding and was found unresponsive outside her home about six hours later.

28-year-old Michael Jackson-Bolanos was charged with felony murder in the Woll’s death. He was also charged with home invasion and lying to a peace officer

He was expected in court Wednesday, but prosecutors said there’s so much discovery and asked for more time to gather and hand it over to the defense.

Prosecutors believe Jackson-Bolanos killed Woll during a home invasion in her Lafayette Park neighborhood. Authorities have repeatedly said the murder was not motivated by antisemitism and the two did not know each other prior.

Prosecutor Ryan Elsey told Judge Marlena E. Taylor that about two terabytes of discovery needs to be handed over to the defense -- and more is still being gathered.

“Your Honor, I have not been able to provide full discovery,” Elsey said. “I have been working on it diligently.”

Elsey requested a delay of about two weeks. The probable cause conference is now set for Jan. 9.

While the murder has garnered national attention, Detroit police and Wayne County prosecutors have been tight-lipped about the case.
