WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. – A 28-year-old woman from Indiana was critically injured Friday, Jan. 19 when the snowmobile she was riding was struck by a SUV.

According to authorities, it happened at about 3:30 p.m. on M-55 in Cherry Grove Township, just outside Cadillac. Police said a group of snowmobilers were attempting to cross the freeway. The first rider reportedly looked both ways, saw an eastbound vehicle and determined there was enough space and time to cross. When he crossed M-55, police said he heard a crash as he turned around to see if other snowmobilers had crossed or decided to wait.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 29-year-old man from West Branch, told police he saw the woman on the snowmobile stop before pulling into the path of his vehicle and he was unable to stop in time.

Police said people stopped to help the woman, who reportedly did not have a pulse and was showing signs of a head injury. They stayed with her until medical crews arrived and took her to a hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Buick Enclave submitted to a blood draw, but police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
