DUNDEE, Mich. – Police are recognizing several community members for helping with the rescue of a 12-year-old boy in Monroe County.
It happened at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at a pond near the Cabela’s store in Dundee. According to authorities, delivery driver Jonathan Garza heard the boy screaming for help and called 911. Deputy police chief Randy Sehl said Garza “was in the right place at the right time.”
Police and fire crews arrived at the scene within three minutes and found the boy struggling to stay afloat.
Officer Joe Schumaker grabbed personal floatation equipment and while making his way out to the boy, broke through the ice, but continued forward. With the help of two Good Samaritans -- Paxton Barnes and Garrett Desbrough -- authorities were able to bring the child safely to shore.
The boy was transported to a hospital in Toledo for treatment.
