15-year-old shot at Southfield hotel improving, family says

Police: Unsupervised teens had guns in hotel room

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A 15-year-old shot inside a Southfield hotel remains in critical condition.

His family said they are seeing signs of the teen fighting and are asking for the community to pray for him.

While it can be common for parents to get two hotel rooms -- one for young kids to have fun and an adjoining room for parents -- except this time, the adult did not stay.

Skip Mongo’s 15-year-old nephew was at the Westin for a sleepover, when his friend -- a 15 year old Loyola High School student named Tyler was shot in the head.

His nephew was asleep when it happened.

“He woke up and didn’t know it was a gunshot. He says his ears were ringing real bad, as you’d imagine,” Mongo said. “He looks over, he sees one kid on the side of the bed crying, he sees his friend on the floor shot.”

The boys called 911, and one teen was arrested with two handguns, and charged with carrying concealed weapons. But not charged with shooting young Tyler. That teen apparently left.

“Please, I hope you air this, by no means am I justifying any actions that took place,” Mongo said. “It was wrong all the way around the board. It was wrong the moment that young man left the room. It was wrong for whoever brought those guns to bring those guns up there, but at this point we need to be looking for the person who disappeared.”

Mongo said his nephew is now in serious condition.

“Yesterday, they said he was in grave condition,” Mongo said. “It is my understanding, absolutely, that there are small improvements, but improvements.”

Southfield police are still looking to contact the adult who did not stay to supervise and the teen who may have pulled the trigger.

Anyone with information is asked to call Southfield police at 248-796-5500 and reference case number 24-5073. Tips can also be made anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-Speak Up.
