Sleeping child shot in head when Detroit home targeted by multiple shooters

More than 20 shots fired at house Tuesday morning

DETROIT – An 11-year-old girl was shot in the head Tuesday morning while sleeping on the couch inside a Detroit home targeted by multiple shooters and dozens of bullets.

The girl was rushed to a children’s hospital around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20 after being struck in the head by at least one bullet at a home on Pennsylvania Street near Gratiot Avenue. The girl was asleep on a couch at the front of the house when multiple shooters approached the home and fired at least 23 bullets, police confirmed.

The child was listed in critical condition at the hospital. It wasn’t believed that anyone else was injured in the shooting.

Detroit police said there were 15-20 people inside the home when it was targeted by at least two shooters. The exact number of shooters wasn’t immediately known.

When asked about the incident, assistant police Chief Charles Fitzgerald told the media that the “story doesn’t make a lot of sense” as of Tuesday morning. Fitzgerald said there was an uncle inside the home who didn’t “quite know the name of his niece” who was shot, and said the girl’s father had “finally” arrived at the hospital as of around 6:30 a.m.

There was a heavy police presence in the neighborhood Tuesday morning. Investigators were working to find the shooters, whose identities were either unknown or not revealed to the media.

Investigators did have some grainy Ring doorbell camera footage to work with.

The same home was previously targeted by a shooting in December, officials said.

No other details were known as of this writing. Anyone with information can contact Detroit police or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up.
